Biomechanical Leafcutter Ant
In a silicon world, it doesn't harvest leaves. It harvests circuit boards.
In nature, leafcutter ants slice through foliage, hoist the fragments above their heads, and carry them back to cultivate fungus. This mechanical leafcutter ant follows the same instinct — except what it cuts and carries is no longer a green leaf. It is a PCB circuit board, dense with traces and components. The board's edge bears a clear bite mark; chips, capacitors, and solder points are all visible, as if it was just torn from a larger motherboard.
A Harvesting Moment, Frozen in Time
It is captured mid-stride in a dynamic working pose: forelegs raised to brace the circuit board, middle and hind legs firmly planted, segmented antennae reaching forward, and metallic mandibles locked onto its prize. This is no static insect specimen. It is a tense, laboring instant — permanently stilled.
Full-Metal Six Legs — Every Step Is Visible
All six legs are hand-assembled from metal rods, bearings, springs, and copper tubing segments, with fully articulated joints and black-tipped feet. Metal spikes rise from the thorax; the abdomen alternates between rust-orange resin segments and metallic rings. The compound eyes are set in metal bezels, and the mandibles are pure mechanical clamping structures. A body sculpted from resin, woven with a skeleton of metal — the form of carbon-based life, the soul of silicon.
Materials & Craft
Body: hand-sculpted resin with multi-layer hand-painted rust-orange gradient finish
- Legs & mechanics: metal rods, bearings, springs, and copper tubing — individually hand-assembled
- "Leaf": genuine PCB circuit board with bitten edge and electronic components
- Mandibles, antennae, spikes: machined metal components
Size: 9.1 inches (L) x 4.3 inches (W) x 4.1 inches (H)
Each piece is entirely handmade. Subtle variations in circuit board layout and mechanical assembly are the signature of craft — and the mark of a one-of-a-kind work. Ideal for display on a shelf, desk, or tech-inspired space — a splash of silicon-based life for any collection.
